I am building a server for 7 days to die, and the admin file is overwritten by AMP when I modify it.

Is there not a way to make in game players admins? If so, it is not readily apparent. If not, why are there reserved admin slots?

join to the server, open the console in the AMP. Type: Admin add (playername) 0

Playername without ()

that's how it worked for me.

the one who should become admin has to be on the server at the moment.

It might help to familiarise yourself with 7 Days to Die console commands. There's a whole list of them here on the wiki.

In addition to the above, you can also use Entity ID (which is 171 for the first player on the server) or use Steam ID (if you join, you can see it from the logs).

The last number in the command, which in the post above as "0", refers to the permission level. 0 is the maximum permissions level.

Thank you, I didn't realize they had to be online at the time. Newb mistake.

Does that mean I also have to use the console to set permission levels for each individual command? Useful to know, but it'd be nice to have a batch selector or interface for that.

You can set the permission level for individual commands in the serveradmin.xml (found under saves in AMP file manager). You can also set other things in here too, such as the whitelist, blacklist, and even add admins there if you want.

I would imagine you could do it via the ingame console (if you have permissions for it) and the AMP console if you wanted.

that's the same file you set admins in, it gets overwritten when I modify it directly, that's why I couldn't save admins that way.

unless I'm missing a setting or something about the overwrite.

I'm pretty familiar with modding files, the only reason I sound so unknowledgable here is I've never worked with any kind of third party server management in any way. I really appreciate you guys, that admin thing was driving me nuts, I wanted to have the world set up for first log in, but I can handle doing a couple things at first run if that's what it takes.

You're right, it does overwrite. It has been a while since I have hosted this game except just testing updates. I cannot recall if it always did this. I don't have answer to this it seems.
